Despite the fact that the rhinoplasty procedure takes very little time, patients need to understand that there will be a short recovery period associated with this surgery. It is not always fun to rest and recover, but taking the necessary time to do this will ensure the best results for the patient. Dr. Kevin Sadati feels that patients who are prepared for their upcoming recovery do better throughout the process. As a board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Sadati knows that this is a traumatic event for the facial structure and emphasizes that his patients need to have patience and understanding as they recover.
The average Orange County patient who frequents Dr. Sadati’s Newport Beach practice will spend between 7 and 10 days recovering from their rhinoplasty procedure. After a nose job, the patient will most likely experience some amount of swelling and bruising on the face. The amount that occurs depends on the techniques that were used during the surgery. For instance, patients who required an osteotomy will experience significant swelling and bruising as this technique requires the surgeon to break the nose before fixing any structural issues. Patients who do not have an osteotomy done will have less swelling and bruising on their face. It is not until the swelling and bruising subsides completely that patients will be able to see their true results.
Dr. Sadati knows that bruising and swelling are not an ideal side effect, so to help combat these symptoms he provides the following bits of advice:
- Immediately following the surgery, ice packs and cold compresses should be applied to the face for up to 48 hours. These items will not only reduce swelling on the face, but they will keep the face numb allowing the patient to better manage their own pain levels.
- Starting two weeks prior to the surgery date, patients should avoid blood-thinning products such as naproxen sodium, ginseng, garlic pills, vitamin E, ibuprofen, aspirin and glucosamine.
- Herbal supplements can also be taken to help minimize bruising. Some herbal supplements that have been proven to help include papaya extract and Bromelain.
As every patient is valued as an individual in Dr. Sadati’s practice, each patient receives custom post-operative instructions. It is crucial that patients follow these instructions closely as they are the key to successful results. The surgical procedure is only the first step in achieving a better-looking nose, a patient must be careful during the recovery process in order to seal the deal.
